My mother pinning up her saree.
I am ever entranced by the classics. No doubt a scene acted out innumerable times in a day, let alone down through the recurring days of all the ages. Still, so seemingly simple a snapshot, of a seemingly so inauspicious a daily necessity, is an undeniable tonic to me. Rekindles very fantastic memories for me of a Mom of a friend who so often could be seen in the same frame -- exact. How the pinning of a saree can bring all else of a close friend streaming back.
Actually, only auspicious occasions find my mother draped in this graceful garment. Globalization garbs us in Tees and denims on a daily basis. And I've never pinned a saree on my shoulder at all!
Now that is a highly fascinating juxtaposition to me. The lady i know who wears a saree has lived in the US since the 1960s and shuns, SHUNS! any other kind of dress. To hear the home folks have gone Levi Strauss is a tickle.
